Proposed Health Scheme Charges Flat Rate for All, Says Liow
KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed National Health Financing Scheme will not force the rich to pay a higher contribution based on their income, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai. He said the system would most probably be based on a “flat rate” which makes all except the poorest to pay the same rate. “It’s not like the higher your salary, the higher you pay. No, not like that. It’s a flat rate. It’s a minimal amount,” Liow told a press conference after opening a health care seminar here Sunday. Liow said the scheme was not likely to be split into various sub-schemes which make people of different income levels pay differently. However, he said that those with higher incomes could opt to buy extra insurance for them if they wanted better medical services. “If the rich want to have better service on top of what they have, they can buy insurance.
