Preventing foodborne trematode infections

14 August 2012 — Foodborne trematode infections affect more than 56 million people throughout the world. These infections are caused by trematode worms (“flukes”). People become infected through the consumption of raw fish, crustaceans or vegetables that harbour the parasite larvae. This new fact sheet provides further information on prevention, treatment and WHO’s work.

15 August 2012 — The World Health Organization strongly welcomes the landmark decision from Australia’s High Court to dismiss a legal challenge from the tobacco industry, and calls on the rest of the world to follow Australia’s tough stance on tobacco marketing.

Preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Swaziland

9 August 2012 — About 41% of pregnant women in Swaziland are infected with HIV, and they give birth to over 17 000 babies who are exposed to HIV. The prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV is a top priority for the Government of Swaziland.
