Update Regarding FIP Centennial Top 100 Pharmacists

Dear FIP Member Organisations,

It is our regrettable task to inform you that the Top 100 Pharmacists project has been put on hold and the Top 100 Pharmacists list will not be released at the FIP Centennial Congress.

This has been a difficult decision for FIP, one that is reflective of internal challenges that FIP is currently facing, and which by no means is a result of the quality of the nominations received, or of those who nominated them.  Through this initiative we have come to be reminded of the wonderful work that has been – and continues to be – done by pharmacists globally, and we commend each and every nominee for their on-going efforts in upholding and advancing the profession of pharmacy throughout the world.

Again, on behalf of FIP and our officers, many apologies for this unfortunate turn of events. We will be in touch in the future should we recommence the nomination process and will keep all nominated individuals on file for future consideration. We greatly value the work invested to date in the nomination process and are dedicated to acknowledging all involved.

WHPA Releases Report on Forum for “Collaborative Practice”
Some 35 participants registered for the WHPA forum on collaborative practice, held in Geneva on 20 May 2012. FDI President Dr Orlando Monteiro da Silva chaired the morning session, briefly addressing the session on the pressing need for close collaboration among the difference health professions.

FIP Collaborates with the WGO for World Digestive Health Day
FIP has recently collaborated with the World Gastroenterology Organisation and contributed an article on the pharmacist’s role in GI health for a published supplement for World Digestive Health Day.

The major statements are as follows:

1. Professional activities/operations/rights of pharmacists redefined enlarging professional  fields where pharmacists are the only people with responsibility.

2. Ownership criteria is strenghtened saying ONLY a pharmacist can open and own a pharmacy. One pharmacist one pharmacy and closing the pathway to chain pharmacies. Unethical/illegal  ownership arrangements,if detected, is a reason for 5 years penalty for the pharmacist. If they are colleagues everyone of them will be punished.

3. Demographic restriction for every 3500 inhabitants per pharmacy. All present pharmacists either working or not and present students in faculties have right to open a pharmacy without any restriction at any place. Beginning this year new pharmacy students have to adapt themselves to restrictions.

4. Products to be sold in pharmacies are redefined. Pharmaceuticals, licenced traditional herbal products, homeopathic products, special diet products and enteral nutritional products can ONLY be dispensed/sold in pharmacies.

Licenced food supplements, veterinarian products (together with veterinarians), cosmetics, baby foods, nutritional products for metabolism disorders, medical devices  can be sold in pharmacies.

This statement also closes the way for pharmaceuticals to be sold outside of pharmacies again.

5. Presidency members of TPA Executive Committee must assign a responsible pharmacist for their community pharmacies and their salary will be paid by TPA.

NEW in 2012 – the FIP Pharmacy Technicians and Support Workforce Symposium
New to the FIP Congress this year is a special Pharmacy Technicians and Support Workforce Symposium. The inaugural Symposium will provide pharmacy technicians and members of the pharmacy support workforce valuable tools to further develop skills in these areas and have a greater positive effect on pharmacy functioning and patient care. This will be examined through three sessions:

• Role of the Pharmacy Technician Worldwide
• Education for the Pharmacy Support Staff
• Patient Safety – how can technicians best support patient safety initiatives in the pharmacy?
