MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members,

A historical event in MPS took place last weekend. It was the brainstorming at a Strategic Planning Meeting held in Cyberview Lodge, Cyberjaya. Members of the MPS Council as well as representatives from PhAMA, MOPI, MAPS and MCPG as well as Hospital Pharmacy sat solidly over 14 hours to conduct a SWOT analysis of the Pharmacy programme and draw up some short, medium and long term plans of the Society.

The planning was “sparked off” by a comprehensive key-note address by YBhg Dato’ Eisah bte Abdul Rahman, Senior Director of Pharmaceutical Services who spared her precious well-earned weekend rest to be with the 20-odd participants and “walked” participants through the vision of the Pharmaceutical Services Division and highlighted some recent development.

The Honorary Legal Counsel of the Society YBhg Dato’ Dr Manjit Singh Sachdev and assistant Mr Neoh Eng Kee were on hand to give insightful advice on the various areas to pay attention to.  In particular, it was proposed that the Society explores Professional Indemnity Insurance for members as part of the Membership Benefits’ scheme. Furthermore, fees for tracking CPD points for members were recommended to be reviewed.

The participants were then broken up into 3 groups to explore at great lengths

the steps to be taken to “re-brand” MPS
to strategize towards Dispensing Separation ; and
to intensify the Continuing Development Programme (CPD) using the Academy of Pharmacy as one of the avenues.

All the in-depth discussion will be compiled into a memorandum for proactive steps to be taken towards Dispensing Separation, the possibility of enhancing the use of the Social Media and other means for communication and further efforts to support the National Medicines’ Policy.

An impending development would be the opportunity to take over the filling of prescriptions for foreigners who shall only be given five days amount of dispersed medicines in public hospitals. This could possibly result in the increasing number of prescriptions that would “filter” to the private sector. Anyhow, the “wish list” of MPS is to see Dispensing Separation by April 2015.

While this message is being read by members, the FAPA Organizing Committee members in Kota Kinabalu are “gearing up” for the vist of the FAPA Bureau members from 7th – 10th March 2014. Our hopes are continually being “lifted” by the on-line registration from all corners of the globe. Let Malaysian Pharmacists take the lead and show the way to the 25th FAPA Congress 2014 from 9 – 12 October 2014.

Hearing from the Senior Director, pharmacists in the public sector have continually done us proud with their award-winning trails on the local and International scenes. Let us keep forging forward and show that “Pharmacists Boleh”.

Keep up the good work!

Yours in MPS

(Datuk Nancy Ho)

4TH FIRST AID COURSE AND EXAMINATION 2014

The Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society-Young Pharmacist Chapter (MPS-YPC) and St Johns Ambulans Malaysia is organising the 4th First Aid Course and Examination on 19 to 20 April 2014. The course is conducted by certified trainers from the St John Ambulance Malaysia and will encompass several aspects of first aid including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The course will also include an examination whereby upon passing, participants will receive a certificate from St Johns Ambulans Malaysia. We believe that as healthcare professionals, it is important that pharmacists be equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide first aid and be trained to respond appropriately during emergencies. These skills will also enable the pharmacist to contribute to pre-hospital patient care and sharpen their clinical skills. As such, we would highly encourage all pharmacists to attend this course. Should you require more information regarding this event, please email us at [email protected] or contact the MPS Secretariat at 03-80791861.
