What you should know about Dabigatran
What is atrial fibrillation? When a person has atrial fibrillation (AF), the heart beats so fast that it is unable to pump all of the blood out of its chambers leading to pooling of blood. This may result in blood clots; the cause of problems such as strokes and heart attacks. The blood thinner Warfarin (Marevan) hasbeen used for many years to prevent stroke in people who have atrial fibrillation.
What is Dabigatran? Dabigatran is an oral blood thinner which works differently from Warfarin. It prevents the formation of a stable blood clot by blocking a chemical, thrombin in our body.
In Singapore, Dabigatran is sold under the brand name of Pradaxa®. The recommended dose for prevention of stroke in AF is 150mg twice daily unless one’s kidney function
